The Town is a 2010 American crime film starring, co-written and directed by Ben Affleck that is adapted from Chuck Hogan's novel Prince of Thieves.The film opened in theaters in the United States on September 17, 2010, to overwhelmingly positive reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a "Certified Fresh" rating with 94% positive critical reviews. In addition, the film opened at number one at the United States box office with more than $23 million. Jeremy Renner was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as James "Jem" Coughlin.

The motion picture is one of a number of films set in Boston, Massachusetts, over the past decade that have formed a "sub-genre" of crime movies, including Affleck's own 2007 film Gone Baby Gone.
